Happy 4th of July!

Doesn’t it seem like we were just waving the flag for Memorial Day and now here we are approaching “the 4th”!  The celebration of this beloved holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 overflows with all things Americana! First and foremost the flying of the American flag, then of course fireworks, parades, picnics, bike rides, BBQ’s, and cooling, festive cocktails! It’s this last item on the list that we thought we’d chat about! Yep, how about an easy, slushy, frozen kinda concoction that is easy peasy to whip up!

Nick Detrich of Cane & Table in New Orleans puts a spin on the simple “Otter Pop” of sorts! Frozen cocktails are a way of life in southern Louisiana so Nick kicked it all up a notch or two and mixes sophisticated cocktails in freezer zip top bags! Pop ’em in the freezer to make a slushy of sorts and wow do you have a festive adult drink! All ya need to do is mix the ingredients right in the bag, seal it up and wait for the freezer to work it’s magic! The secret is calibrating the ratio of ingredients to yield a mixture with just the right alcohol and sugar content to freeze into a slushy consistency—too much alcohol and the mix will remain liquid; not enough sugar and it’ll freeze completely solid. One batch makes 2-3 quarts in a gallon sized bag or divide up into sandwich sized bags.Press the air out of each bag to leave room for the mixture to expand as it freezes, and place them on a baking sheet as insurance against a spill. There’s the tart and fruity Fino Hemingway, which swaps the rum in Ernest’s favorite Daiquiri for nutty (and lower-alcohol) sherry; the Royal Americano, which mixes bitter Campari, herbal sweet vermouth, and Coca-Cola for a complex refresher; and a seriously boozy Mint Julep.

Slushies-to-go

Fino Hemingway Slush

INGREDIENTS:

25 oz. Manzanilla sherry (such as La Guita)

5 oz. Maraschino liqueur

10 oz. grapefruit juice

5 oz. lime juice

12.5 oz. water

Royal Americano Slush 

INGREDIENTS:

20 oz. Campari

20 oz. sweet vermouth

60 oz. Coca-Cola

5 oz. water

Happy 4th of July!

Mint Julep Slush

INGREDIENTS:

20 oz bourbon

50 oz. water

1 1/4 cup sugar

20 Fresh mint leaves

PREPARATION

  • Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend on high until the mint is almost completely pulverized, working in batches if needed.
  • Pour into a zip-top freezer bag and seal tightly. Freeze overnight or until slushy in consistency.
